German vintners are creating some excellent wines, but some of the commercial Grosslage wines being sold in great quantities are atrocious. German wine authorities and journalists need to take the country's heritage as a wine producer more seriously.

Italian wines of the 1985 vintage are at an excellent stage in their maturation process. They are not too young, but they do not need to be drunk right away. The 1985 Sassicaia is similar to a first-growth Bordeaux and is excellent.
