Elusive Pinot noire
Article Abstract:
Pinot Noir is a California wine variety that has achieved respectability because of its fruity flavor. It has at the same time become more expensive. The best can compare favorably with some Burgundies in taste. An evaluation of 166 California Pinot Noir vintages is presented.

Wines released in 1996 are profiled. They are rated on a scale of one to 100, with tasting notes and prices provided. The 1994 vintage is excellent, as were 1990 and 1991. A 1994 Dehlinger Russian River Valley Pinot Noir Reserve at $32 is rated 95.

Pinot Noir can be excellent or very bad, and it is not an easy grape to grow. Uneven ripening, sensitivity to hot weather and other factors affect the wine. The aging process in French oak barrels must not go on too long.
