The Pinot Grail
Article Abstract:
California's desire to capture the essence of Pinot Noir has existed since the earliest days of fine wine in the state, but achieving the celestial quality of great red Burgundies remains maddeningly elusive. Two wines that achieved legendary status were the 1946 and 1947 vintages of Beaulieu Vineyard, and although winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff, often called 'the maestro', considered them his greatest achievements, he was never able to make equally great wines again.

California Pinot Noir

The dramatic turnaround brought a profusion of riveting wines and elevated California Pinot Noir to the global wine stage, with quality that closely matches the grand reds of Burgundy.
