French retail prices will remain low until after recession
Article Abstract:
French retail prices are affected by levels of unemployment and salaries and are not likely to rise until wages and employment improve. Food consumption growth has been stagnant, with a drop in average prices in 1993-1994. Overall retail prices were down by 2% in 1993, due to price wars. Discounted lines are set to rise as a proportion of total sales and mergers and acquisitions are also set to rise. Companies seeking growth are likely to expand outside France.
