Frozen food sector shows steady growth across western Europe

The frozen food sector has outperformed the general food market in developed countries, according to a report by Euromonitor, due to the demand for convenience food. Western Europe represents 47.6% of global sales, although the US is the largest national market. The frozen food market is relatively new in France and the rise in the number of supermarketsin Italy has led to a move towards frozen foods. Specialist frozen foods such as vegetarian and ethnic foods are expected to grow, and the economy end of the market is expected to develop.

Italians lead ice cream sales in western Europe

A new report by Datamonitor shows that ice cream accounts for 30% of the western Europe frozen food market, valued at some $46 billion. Italians spend the most on ice cream, with sales in 1997 amounting to $757 million, although turnover in the UK is showing the fastest growth. Frozen dessert spending in the UK amounts to $1.35 billion, placing it second behind Germany in western Europe.

Italian boost for frozen food

Consumption of frozen food in Italy rose 6% in 1994, mainly due to door-to-door sales techniques used by the industry. Italian consumers are becoming more attracted to the simplicity and economy of frozen food, and prices are more stable than fresh foods. Frozen vegetables represent about 51% of the total frozen food market, although frozen meat products have fallen 16%.
