Hungary looking to expand confectionery exports to west
Article Abstract:
The confectionery industry in Hungary is to increase its exports to western Europe, although domestic consumption will fall due to reduced purchasing power. The industry is dominated by Szerencs chocolate factory, Gyoer biscuit and waffle factory and Budapest Confectionery Company, which were all privatised in 1991-92. Sweet exports are mainly to Romania, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Ukraine. Illicit trading is currently a kproblem for the confectionery industry in Hungary.

Russian confectionery industry facing major problems as competition from imports increases
Article Abstract:
In the first six months of 1996, Russian output of confectionery products fell 8.3% to 328,000 t, from 358,000 t in the same period of 1995. The industry has been affected by rising prices of raw materials, less consumer disposable income, and increased competition from imported products. According to head of food industries at the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, Alexander Pavlov, the industry requires modernisation and reorganisation.

CEECs a growth market for confectionery
Article Abstract:
The confectionery markets in Central and Eastern Europe countries (CEECs) will see steady growth during the remainder of the decade according to a report by ERC Statistics International. Chocolate sales have already reached 1990 levels helped by a sharp rise in sales in Russia. However consumption of sugar-based confectionery due to a sharp fall in Russia and the collapse of sales in Ukraine.
