Retailers and suspermarket operators are looking for ways to improve the efficiency of refrigerator cases to cut down on operating costs and stay competitive. A a researcher at Edison International of Rosemead, CA, an energy management company, recommends that retailers maintain their equipment through a regular inspection of their refrigeration systems' major components such as gaskets, seals, refrigerant charge and insulation. He also suggests the installation of glass doors on open refrigerator cases that can lower eenrgy consumption up to 30%. The retailers have also been advised to consult refrigieration specialists to ensure the proper setting of thermostat and defrost controls.

The retail industry has started to recognize the effective marketing promotion that private label phone cards are able to provide. Robinson Carlson, a manager at Sprint, says that private label phone cards bolsters the image of a retailer to consumers. Meanwhile, Brian Sharoff, president of the Private Label Manufacturers Association (PLMA) warns retailers of the potential setbacks to their image if they are not careful in choosing phone companies that could provide quality service and exemplary features. Having their own private label phone cards, retailers are also able to establish incentive programs and various promotional campaigns.

One way for the retailers to enhance the profitability of HBC is through the development of a nutritional supplement program.
