Label conscious: decanter labels, which had their heyday almost 200 years ago, are perfect for beginning collectors of wine antiques

Article Abstract:

Decanter or wine labels have been enthusiastically collected by wine lovers. They are usually made of silver, although they may also be made of copper, tin, ivory or cloth. The Wine Label Circle, founded in 1952 and composed of 150 members, is a leading society dedicated to this enterprise.

Visitors to London will find numerous antiques shops. Wine antiques can be purchased at such places as Mary Cook Antiques in Kensington, and Camden Passage and Portobello are major outdoor markets. Addresses and telephone numbers for several outlets are given.

Eastern pioneer: Philip Wagner reflects on his dual careers, which educated and inspired two generations of winemakers and wine lovers

Wagner, 91, wrote the first English-language book on winemaking in 1933. He is the father of East Coast winemaking and his books are still in print. Wagner discusses winemaking after prohibition ended, his early interest in wine and other topics.
