Merger of GrandMet and Guinness creates GMG Brands, spirits giant

Guinness and Grand Metropolitan plan to merge to form one company named GMG Brands which will be worth 2.4 billion pounds sterling. The GMG company will become the seventh largest drinks and food business in the world. Both companies will gain access to new markets, with Guinness's interest in Europe and Grand Metropolitan's enterprises in North America. The new company intends to reduce costs of around 175 million pounds sterling by rationalizing some operations and combining headquarters. The deal must be ratified by both UK and European authorities before it comes to fruition.

Demerger plans unveiled at Hillsdown Holdings

Diversified UK concern Hillsdown Holdings is set to focus on grocery foods as it sells off its furniture division and a number of smaller food units and demerges its chilled foods and Fairview new homes businesses. The disposals are set to raise around 600 million pounds sterling for Hillsdown, of which around 400 million pounds sterling will be returned to the company's shareholders. Media reports indicate that dairy and chilled foods concern Unigate is considering a takeover bid for Hillsdown.
