More support for French SMEs
Article Abstract:
Plans to protect small and medium size companies (SMEs) from the rapid growth in hypermarkets have been unveiled by Alain Juppe, French Prime Minister. Food retailers in particular will benefit from the plans which involve changing the threshold at which permission is required to open a store to 300 square metres from 1000 square metres. SMEs have mostly welcomed the proposals, and many larger chains see it as an opportunity to expand overseas.

Approximately 2,800 jobs were created by the company during 1995.
