Northern's profits fall as cost of restructuring takes its toll

Northern Foods of the UK, a food company, has reported its first fall in pre-tax profits for 39 years. Restructuring has cost the company 102.9 million pounds sterling and group sales were down 2.1% on 1993. The grocery sector improved, helped by good performances at Fox's and Smith's Flour Mills. The company will be able to develop is involvement in the increased added-value frozen products market with the acquisition of Green Isle, an Irish frozen food company.

Northern Foods of the UK, a food group, is to undertake restructuring which will mean the loss of another 2,200 jobs and will cost 91 million pounds sterling. The company's most important product is milk and it has been affected by the reduction in doorstep deliveries. It will close its Eden Vale Chillserve van delivery operations and will merge its Pork Farms and Bowyers van sales networks.

Good times return at Northern

Northern Foods of the UK, a food manufacturer, has reported pre tax profit up 4% to 124.2 million pounds sterling in the year to March, with both dairy and prepared food divisions seeing a rise in operating profits. The rise is attributed to restructuring, inlcuding the reduction of doorstep deliveries and the sale of its van sales business, and organic growth.
