The anti-alcohol lobby has proposed a bill that will require warning labels on alcoholic beverages, but this is not necessary because people are already aware of the dangers of abuse. A recent Roper Poll indicates that nearly everyone knows about the potential dangers.

Wine prices are up, consumption was up 6.5% in 1996 from 1995, and the number of restaurants offering a good selection of wines has increased dramatically. Wine Spectator's circulation is also up. These trends point to a healthy future for wine.

Spain grew more modern and prosperous after entering the European Community in 1986. Unfortunately, the wine industry, particularly in Rioja, is still lagging. There are many good Riojas, but there are also still many dull, tired ones.
