Poor Ports from great grapes

Article Abstract:

Many 1985 Ports are outstanding, such as the Fonseca and Taylor Fladgate, and some are very good. Several from that vintage are disappointing, however, such as the Burmester and Quarles Harris. The latter were among wines contaminated with acetobacter.

Tuscany's red treasures

Article Abstract:

The 2001 vintage from Tuscany produced plenty of outstanding Sangiovese based wines. A bottle of Flaccianello shows the unique character of Sangionvese grapes and about 1,000 cases would be shipped to the United States.

Treading grapes is more than romantic

Article Abstract:

Most wineries use machines instead of having winery workers stomp down the grapes with their bare feet. Some of the finest Port houses, however, still practice treading, and the results are excellent.
