Possible BSE link with CJD
Article Abstract:
The news from the UK government that bovine spongiform encephalopathy could be linked to a new form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob (CJD) disease in humans could badly affect the British beef industry. Previously, any link between the two brain diseases has been denied. The new form of CJD tends to affect young people and is thought to be contracted by eating BSE-infected beef. In 1989, the use of brain and spinal cord in meat products was banned. It is expected that the news will cause consumers to switch away from beef to other meats.

New scare prompts renewed Swedish call for meat labelling
Article Abstract:
The Federation of Swedish Farmers (FSF) is making continued calls for meat sold in the union to be labelled according to origin, following new scientific evidence that BSE can be transmitted from cow to calf. FSF believes such a move would restore consumer confidence in beef, although Swedish farm minister Annika Ahnberg is the only minister demanding mandatory meat labelling.
