Red wine contains potential anti-cancer agent; Illinois researchers find that substance in grapes reduces tumor growth in lab mice by up to 98 percent

Researchers at the Univ of Illinois at Chicago found that the chemical resveratrol, which is found in red wine, reduced skin tumors in mice by as much as 98%. Research on human subjects is about two years away. Heart disease, skin cancer and colon cancer could be prevented by resveratrol.

Univ of California Davis chemist and enologist Andrew Waterhouse has found phenolics in red wine and cocoa powder. Phenolics may help prevent the oxidization of LDL cholesterol, which leads to clogging of the arteries and heart disease.
