Rioja growers quick to plant

Rioja vintners are the victims of a bureaucratic snafu regarding vineyard regulations. Some of the plantings are illegal, even those of the most prestigious vintners. Spain's appellation board is downplaying the controversy, saying it will be straightened out.

Spain's Vega Sicilia invests in Hungary

Vega Sicilia will spend $4 million to $5 million in a joint venture with the Hungarian government to produce the excellent Tokay wines of the region. Vega Sicilia hopes to bottle 28,000 cases of the high-quality sweet wine during the coming five years.

Falling peseta may not mean lower prices

The devalued Spanish peseta will not result in reduced prices for US consumers unless the exchange rate remains as it is for at least a year, according to Spanish vintners. Responses of several vintners are given.
