Sainsbury to launch cut-price own label lines

Sainsbury of the UK, a retailer, is to launch a cut-price own label brand to win back market share from both Tesco and Safeway. The Economy label is to be used on existing own label goods and may include tertiary brands produced by less well known brand manfuacturers. The company has already been operating the Essential for the Essentials marketing campaing on own label and branded goods.

Italian discount stores open at a rate of 100 each month

There are over 1,200 discount stores in Italy taking a 5.4% share of the grocery market, according to industry figures. 100 new stores are opening each month and Standa has opened 20 experimental discount stores in Lombardy, with plans to open 100 outlets. La Rinascente, an Italian retailer, has opened four discount stores in Sicily and is planning further openings.
