Spanish meat industry hit by swine fever

Article Abstract:

The supply of meat from Spanish pig-breeders has been reduced by around 8% due the the affects of an outbreak of swine fever. The Spanish meat industry may find it necessary to reduce the working day of 40% of its workforce hours to help counteract the high cost of meat. The meat processing companies are calling for an improvement in the conditions that pigs are kept to prevent further outbreaks of the disease. They have also appealed to the Spanish government to reduce import charges and increase quotas of meat from third countries.

Richer does noto mean healthier according to latest Spanish research

Article Abstract:

A report shows that low income households in Spain have the healthiest diets with increased consumption of milk, eggs, chicken, pulses, cereals, vegetables and olive oils. Those households with higher incomes have reduced their calory intake over the past few years, with lower consumption of potatoes, sugar, vegetables and bread. They also consume more red meat resulting in high levels of animal proteins. Marketing contributes to dietary changes with some products seen as more fashionable than others.
