Above and beyond: technology takes a step past EDI

Article Abstract:

Supermarkets are hesitant to employ electronic data interchange (EDI) due to information accuracy glitches, a lack of industrywide support and capital expenditure. EDI is a key step toward electronic commerce and extranets play a significant role in effecting EDI. Extranets, which are employed to exchange information between organizations or customers, can also be used in the grocery industry. By means of extranets, suppliers could effect bids online, retailers could have negotiations on prices, firms could post promotional calendars and purchase orders could be exchanged online, without the fear that confidential information might be accessed by competitors.
