Makers that provide new, creative merchandising strategies for basic baby merchandise that include baby wipes, accessories, diapers and skincare items, are likely the ones to remain competitive in the market. Since 1992, diaper sales have been decreasing as birth rate declines, according to a research that was conducted by FIND/SVP of New York, NY. In order to appeal to particular client requests, makers are changing their product lines, while other makers are employing creative merchandising strategies. For instance, Dallas, TX-based Kimberly-Clark Corp. enhanced its Huggies Supreme diapers to offer boosted absorbency and an enhanced fastening system.

Leading beer companies, such as St. Louis, MO-based Anheuser-Busch (A-B) and Stroh Brewery Co. of Detroit, MI, are giving importance to customer data to help them design and sharpen sales strategies. For instance, A-B has offered an extensive support program to help retailers oversee the beer category. A-B routinely collects data from some 11,000 supermarkets across the US using sophisticated retail tracking technology by Information Resources Inc. of Chicago, IL. Recently, Stroh, US fourth biggest beer maker, reached a deal with St. Petersburg,FL-based Catalina Marketing Corp. to supply the former with comprehensive industry and customer data.

Innovative and quality-oriented baby food products have emerged as sales of baby food, formula, diapers, juices and snacks have stayed steady in recent years, and in some cases, sales declined due to a drop in the US birth rate. Gerber Products Co. of Fremont, MI, introduced a new line of premium, organic juices and foods in 20 diversified varieties. Meanwhile, Boulder, CO-based Mom's Organic Choice, which is a maker of branded and private label items, initiated a research that showed that consumers are ready to pay as much as 25% more for an item that is certified organic.
