What to do if the IRS fouls up

Article Abstract:

Individuals who find that the IRS has erred in handling their account should first contact their local IRS office, making sure to deal with a permanent, full-time IRS employee. Complaints ruled valid locally can be adjusted by tax service representatives through IRS Form 3870. The taxpayer should ask for a freeze of the account, which keeps the IRS computers 'on hold' for up to 15 weeks. Careful maintenance of documentation is critical, including correspondence and a copy of the taxpayer Integrated Data Retrieval System printout. Administrative matters such as late refund checks can be appealed at district Problem Resolution Offices if initial direct efforts fail. The final appeal step would be an action in US Tax Court.

Broadening of the bar

Article Abstract:

Minority employment in law firms may not have increased substantially, but there are encouraging signs of change in the profession. For example, law firms in New York City, Connecticut and San Francisco have made public commitments to increase minority hiring. Only six years ago law firms told an ABA task force that clients would not accept minority lawyers, but that belief has changed. The ABA Commission on Opportunities for Minorities in the Profession has helped to create a progressive climate for minorities.
