French vintners are galled that US winemaker Jack Davies is calling his sparkling wine Champagne, but Davies insists that it is the method and not the region that should name the wine. Americans have long used the terms Burgundy and Chablis, yet those are French appellations.

Demand from Asian buyers is causing wine prices to spiral upward, and Bordeaux futures are going for twice as much as 1995s in some cases, even though 1995 was a better year. Even second-growths and other good wines from Australia and California are going up in price.
