UK MPs call for tighter curbs on permanent loss leading
Article Abstract:
MPs are calling for the Office of Fair Trading to investigate fully the continued loss leading of products by supermarkets. Also, the National Association of Master Bakers claims that bread is a permanent loss leader by supermarkets which is threatening the viability of independent retailers. The Association also wants environment minister John Gummer to halt out of town store developments and their financial advantages.

Metro consolidates leading position in first half
Article Abstract:
German retail group Metro has announced a profit of 102.2 million marks for the first half of 1998, up 7.8% from same period 1997. The company's global expansion plan, designed to offset the sluggish home market, has cost 95.1 million marks. Metro forecasts that its full-year profit for 1998 will be higher than that for 1997, which amounted to 930 million marks.

Loss leading now illegal in Spain
Article Abstract:
A new Spanish law that came into effect in February 1996 makes it illegal for retailers to sell products as loss leaders. The new law has been introduced following pressure from smaller retailers unable to compete with large multiples and superstores. Any store found breaking the law is liable to fines ranging from 500,000-100 million Spanish pesetas.
