Unilever profits grow but sales decline in first quarter
Article Abstract:
Anglo-Dutch consumer products concern Unilever saw sales decline by 1% in the first quarter of 1998 from the year-earlier period to Hfl22.5 billion. The fall was mainly the result of several disposals during the year. Sales in Europe remained unchanged, while sales in Africa and the Middle East rose by 21%. Sales in Latin America were up by around 15%, boosted by acquisitions in the region. Net profits in the quarter were up 60% from the year-earlier period to Hfl1.4 billion.

Wall's facing prosecution over cabinet exclusivity contracts
Article Abstract:
Birds Eye Wall's may be prosecuted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) over alleged misleading evidence during a Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) investigation into the ice cream market. The investigation was prompted by complaints from competitors claiming that the company's dominant position in the UK ice cream market was partly due to its policy of freezer exclusivity.
