How to defeat electrostatic discharge

Article Abstract:

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a form of electrical noise that can interrupt the operation of and even damage computer equipment. ESD is best known as the shock received when a person touches a metallic surface after building up a charge in his/herself. ESD will harm circuit operation if its voltage and/or current exceeds the signal levels of the electronic circuit. ESD can be defeated by preventing it altogether, by preventing its coupling with devices and by increasing a device's inherent noise immunity. A level of immunity can be designed into an integrated circuit providing alternative paths for the static to flow to ground. Filters can also be used to stop ESD noise from being coupled to devices. Conductive metallic barriers and insulating shields can provide an effective enclosure for computer systems.
