The accumulation of copper by microvillar vesicles isolated from human placenta

Article Abstract:

The copper transport system by the microvillar vesicles of the human placenta is studied in vitro by measuring administered radiolabeled copper. Human placental microvillar vesicles can accumulate copper from maternal copper- dihistidine complexes. and is mediated by a carrier-mediated process, dependent on saturation kinetics and sensitive to low temperature and osmotic pressure. Ceruloplasmin can directly block the uptake of copper from its dihistidine complex to the placental vesicles. Similar to this, histidine itself can also inhibit transport of copper through the placental barrier by depleting the amount of substrate.

Shifting from a conventional diet to an uncooked vegan diet reversibly alters fecal hydrolytic activities in humans

Article Abstract:

The effects of shifting from a conventional Western diet to an extreme uncooked vegan diet on potentially carcinogenic microbial enzymes and metabolites were investigated. The results showed that the diet shift promotes a significant reduction in specific enzymes of fecal microflora. In addition, significant decreases were also observed in the concentration of phenols. These results demonstrate that modifications in the colonic environment mediated by an extreme vegan diet have implications in the lowering of risk to colon cancer.
