Champion, Kimberly-Clark sell large timberland areas
Article Abstract:
American and Canadian wood processing companies are buying and selling timberland. In the US, there were two recent sales involving more than 800,000 acres. The Conservation Fund has agreed to pay more than $76.2 million for Champion International Corporation's timberlands located in the northeastern areas of the United States. Southstar Timber Resources LLC will acquire Kimberly-Clark Corporation's Southeast Timberlands in an agreement involving over 529,000 acres. Other transactions are also detailed.

Article Abstract:
Sales of U.S. timberlands in the first six months of 1998 included 2.8 million acres worth $3.5 billion. Kimberly-Clark Corp will close its kraft pulp facilities in Mobile, AL, and sell a half-million acres of timber in MS and AL. Other sales planned include Sappi Ltd's 911,000 acres in Maine, operated by S.D. Warren Co, and Mead Corp's 50,000 acres in Michigan.

Timber companies continue to maximize their assets by selling timberlands. AssiDoman AB of Sweden, Fletcher challenge Ltd of New Zealand, Georgia-Pacific Corp. and other companies have recently announced timber sales.
