A not-so-retiring physician
Article Abstract:
Hilton Head, SC, has acquired a free clinic that offers such services as primary care, eye, dental and special diagnostics, and is staffed by volunteer retired medical personnel. Retired M.D. Jack B. McConnell managed to recruit 55 retired doctors, 68 nurses, nine dentists and others to staff the clinic which was incorporated in Jun 1992, and received a $50,000 start-up grant from the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation in Aug 1992. The clinic is building a 7,000 sq ft facility, which is expected to be operational by Jan 1, 1994. The clinic, which received from the state special site- and compensation-restricted volunteer licenses, is free to anyone who meets a needs test.

Partners in change are ready to roll
Article Abstract:
A bowling alley in Sulphur, LA, was converted to a center for exercise and health education by West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital and its CEO, Wayne Swiniarski. The center, called Dynamic Dimensions, offers aerobics, exercise equipment and classes about subjects including diabetes, holistic health and heart disease. Local employers help with some of the expenses by paying membership dues for workers. Other hospitals and communities plan similar projects with assistance from the American Hospital Assn and a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
