Assessing cardiovascular status in the older adult with cognitive impairments
Article Abstract:
Nurses face a challenge when assessing the cardiovascular health of cognitively impaired older patients since the usual skills of physical assessment, interpretation of technological data and focused interviewing may no longer do the job. This is because people with dementia can exhibit disruptive behaviors and loss of functional skills which the nurse must know about first. Such knowledge also enables nurses to reduce environmental stress rather than compounding it. A case study of an older adult with cardiovascular problems and mild dementia is given.

New York City physicians serving high volumes of Medicaid children: who are they and how do they practice?
Article Abstract:
The characteristics of New York City physicians that provide care for Medicaid children are studied. Results show that out of 33 physicians, 90% studied outside the US while less than half were board certified. Ninety-eight percent of their patients were under Medicaid while 82% of visits occurred during times of serious illness. These findings raise questions on whether these physicians should be included in managed care plans.
