A Consensus Development Conference on Diabetic Foot Wound Care was held by the American Diabetes Association, April 7-8, 1999, in Boston, MA. A consensus position was developed concerning the value of treating a diabetic foot wound, the biology of wound healing, assessment and classification of diabetic foot wounds, appropriate treatments, treatment evaluation and prevention of recurrent foot wounds.

Diabetic foot wounds: pathogenesis and management
Article Abstract:
Persons with diabetes are at special risk for foot ulcers. Health care providers can reduce hospitalizations and amputations by understanding how this disease develops and the need for treating diabetic foot ulcers aggressively. Treatment options include revascularization and therapeutic shoes, but the most important factor in saving the foot is ongoing patient education.

Diabetic foot ulcers: a point prevalence survey
Article Abstract:
Many diabetes mellitus patients experience leg or foot ulcers, which are leading causes for hospitalization for such patients. The causes for such ulcers is uncertain, but there are procedures for their protection and healing. The survey that is part of this article is designed to gather data from health care practitioners that will improve treatment for this condition.
