Early defibrillation: lessons learned
Article Abstract:
The use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) may improve the survival rates of heart attack victims outside the hospital setting. AEDs, unlike manual defibrillators, are able to analyze the existing heart rhythm and determine whether a shock should be administered. Prehospital heart attack survival rates have risen due to the use of defibrillation. It is now recommended that both professional and lay people trained in basic life support should know how to use AEDs.

Basic life support: controversial and unresolved issues
Article Abstract:
Basic life support of cardiac arrest victims may save lives if done properly as well as immediately. Child victims of cardiac arrest may benefit the most from early initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). CPR should be tried first and emergency services called within a minute. With adult victims, emergency services should be phoned first. New CPR techniques combine chest and abdominal compressions and compression and suction to move the chest.
