Economics, health and health economics: HYEs versus QALYs; a response
Article Abstract:
Two points are considered for discussion. Gafni and Birch should be clear about what 'choice problems under uncertainty' means. They used the phrase to pertain to two different processes: the valuation of uncertain states of the world and valuation using risk in gambling. They have been unable to differentiate valuation of uncertainty from valuation by uncertainty. They should also be very clear about what they consider to be the contribution of the intermediate stage in their valuation procedure.

A note on validating Wagstaff and van Doorlaer's health measure in the analysis of inequalities in health
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine the feasibility of the Wagstaff and van Doorlaer's method of constructing a continuous health measure for the analysis of inequalities of health. The analytical technique and two other methods were then used to compute the health concentration indices for Uppsala County in Sweden. Results were relatively similar for the three methods, confirming the validity of the Wagstaff and van Doorlaer approach.

Modelling programme costs in economic evaluation
Article Abstract:
Economic evaluations are being done simultaneous to the analysis of clinical trial data on the effectiveness of particular treatments. Economic data on the resource consequences of treatment paths are likely to be incomplete among some patients. Survival analysis techniques with covariates were suggested to be applied to data on total program costs. Coefficients derived from these procedures should be carefully interpreted.
