Expanding Internet access for health care consumers

Article Abstract:

Health care consumers' access to Internet use is an important issue for the healthcare industry and its stakeholders. This is because healthcare organizations which are able to provide information through the Internet will have a competitive advantage. The main barriers to widespread Internet use are financial, geographic and attitudinal. The healthcare industry and its stakeholders can help in the dissemination of Internet access through community programs, the installation of computers in public places and by sponsoring computer literacy classes.

Commentary on "Total quality management: field of dreams?" (comment on article by B. Bigelow and M. Arndt in this issue, p. 15)

Article Abstract:

The absence of empirical research confirming the success of total quality management (TQM) in health care may be attributed to five factors. First, the relevance of TQM in business has only been recently explored. A second factor is the onerous implementation of the approach to TQM. Other factors are the unresolved issue of causality, the lack of performance measurements and the belief that documentation of TQM is unnecessary.
