HMO versus private care medical systems: a study to determine the aging consumers' satisfaction with medical care under these two systems
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted in a major southwestern community of 175 persons over 65 years old to determine how their satisfaction with a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) compared with that of a private physician. A 20-item questionnaire was administered and the data analysed using multivariate analysis of variance. Convenience and doctor-patient relationship rated high among those with a private physician while low cost was of great importance to those using HMOs. Those with private care thought it superior in quality to the HMO, while HMO customers rated the quality similar.

The influence of older consumers' information search activities on their use of health care innovations
Article Abstract:
A self-administered questionnaire mailed to a sample of 840 persons over 60 years old yielded data for a study of the influence of type of information search used on the selection and use of health care innovations. Generic over the counter (GOTC) drugs and self-diagnosis devices were selected as the innovative products to be studied. Those adopting GOTC drugs relied on medical experts, interpersonal and outlet-dominated sources of information while adopters of self-diagnostic devices relied most on marketing/mass media and independent expert-dominated sources.

Physician employment experiences in health maintenance organizations: analysis of an urban HMO
Article Abstract:
A case study of doctors working for health maintenance organizations (HMOs) revealed that they prefer to work in the HMO environment because their quality of life is better than that of fee-for-service doctors. HMO doctors feel they have better pay despite their lower income due to lesser working time. Most of the doctors interviewed are not aspiring to be promoted to managerial positions. HMO doctors believe that the quality of medical service is not jeopardized by the HMO environment.
