The Need for Professional Administrators in Rural Hospitals
Article Abstract:
The lack of professional managers directing rural health and hospital facilities is examined. Professional leadership in the health care industry heads toward urban and suburban areas after graduation. Half of the hospital facilities in the United States contain fewer than one hundred beds; the majority being located in rural regions. Research has shown, however, that numerous students would not pursue employment in rural communities, usually with less than 10,000 inhabitants. Various governmental, state and private health foundations claim that rural health care programs are poorly managed because they have no trained administrative executives. But hospital boards question the need for hiring such experts. Some board members do not recognize the complicated problems and intricacies associated with hospital administration and are not willing to pay competitive salaries to competent professionals.
