JCAHO; accreditation at the crossroads

Article Abstract:

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)is adopting new standards for hospitals to meet. JCAHO beginning in 1994, will collect new types of data from hospitals and make unannounced surveys. The JCAHO's stronger stance on public disclosure about health-care providers and the new approach will help the hospital industry keep government micro-managers at bay. In JCAHO's new approach, quality of care and its outcome matter more than paperwork and processes.

The faces of Medicaid

Article Abstract:

Medicaid is expected to be reduced when the US Congress attempts to balance the budget. The Medicaid system needs to be changed carefully to ensure that the older and younger US citizens who rely upon it will continue to receive health care and aid. A fair system should be utilized which depends upon the need and income of the recipient. Major reductions will not solve the crisis and flexibility in the system should be maintained.
