Mad cows and weird science
Article Abstract:
Hospitals are taking extraordinary measures to fight proteinaceous infectious particles (prions), which cause subacute spongiform encephalopathy, whose forms include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and mad cow disease. The measures are needed, because the particles can withstand standard infection-control methods. Jo Micek of Kansas City, MO's St. Joseph Health Center noted the importance of setting up prion-control measures in advance.
