Medical Record Department Productivity Standards: A Case Study
Article Abstract:
Backlogs in Medical Records indicated that there was a staffing problem at St. Joseph's Hospital in Joliet. In order to justify increased staffing, productivity standards and measurements needed to be developed. After the standards were established, productivity levels were determined. Continuous monitoring of the productivity program was important in order that it continue to be an accurate management tool. Data processing generated year-to-date reports that compared budget with actual productivity hours. The results of the program were that two more employees were justified and subsequently added to the medical records staff. The program has provided information for staffing, employee evaluation, systems justification, departmental productivity and identification of trends.

The Medical Record Practitioner - Roles, Images and influence
Article Abstract:
Although studies have indicated that with the advent of DRGs Medical Records activities have become more important than financial management activities, it is still often suggested that Medical Records be transferred to finance rather than the reverse. The survival of the Medical Records profession may depend on whether talented and assertive people can be attracted to and held in the profession.
