Medicare malaise: with bankruptcy looming on the horizon, is it finally time to heed the warnings that funds are running out?
Article Abstract:
Forecasts that Medicare Part A, the hospital insurance trust fund, will be bankrupt in the year 2001, have not produced the reforms which are needed to prevent the fund's collapse. Medicare Part B, the fund for doctors' bills and outpatient expenses has been forecast to remain solvent. Although Part A has a $121 billion surplus in 1996, it spends more than it takes in. At the current rate, it will produce a $53 billion deficit in 2001. Conflicting reform proposals and political squabbling have prevented the institution of the necessary long-term reforms.

There is nothing like an aim
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp. has targeted the healthcare industry for the marketing of servers based on Intel microprocessors. The industry has been chosen because it accounts for 12% to 13% of desktop computer sales, yet trails industries such as banking and retail in the application of information management systems. Data General, already well known in the healthcare industry, has introduced AViiON, an Intel-based server family. Health care providers will be a key market for Intel's Quad P6 circuit board with four Pentium Pro chips when it is rolled out in late 1996.

Information underload
Article Abstract:
The health care industry and hospitals are lacking a common language that combines business and clinical data. Business decisions are difficult without clinical data and business strategies may not include key clinical goals. Clinical data can be too overwhelming in size to learn anything from it. Hospitals are faced with incorporating training programs and massive computer upgrades to process the information.
