Organizational and environmental determinants of hospital strategy

Article Abstract:

Research on the effect of organization versus environment on a hospital's business strategy concluded that small and independent hospitals are less likely to have a proactive business strategy than larger hospitals. Thus, organization structure appears to have the greater influence. Local environmental influences, including family income, unemployment rate and ratio of physicians to the population, were some of the environmental characteristics studied. Organizational characteristics used included size of hospital, type of ownership and case-mix severity.
