A holy alliance: a Queens hospital opens a new health center - with little help from a nearby church

Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in Queens, NY is expected to open a $7-million hospital that will accomodate 60,000 visits a year from residents of the 10 low-income communities it serves. The hospital was built in partnership with the 8,000-member Allen AME Church, and is located on church property. It will offer such services as podiatry, dentistry and ob/gyn, among others.

Hospital officials hold regular meetings with neighborhood leaders, established a community service center onsite, and brought in a local planning agency as part of the project team.
