Changes in health care financing: effects on the delivery of health care services in the 1990s
Article Abstract:
Changes in the way health care is paid for have changed access to health care. Provider-directed care, expensive medical technology, and strong competition for services have rapidly driven medical costs up. Payers are attempting to lower costs by requiring providers to regulate clinical and financial outcomes. Cardiovascular care is especially affected by these factors, since it consumes billions of dollars annually. Cardiac providers must intensify their efforts in prevention and appropriate hospital use.
