Public insurance substituting for private insurance: new evidence regarding public hospitals, uncompensated care funds, and Medicaid

The impact of public health insurance programs is discussed. Increasing public health insurance programs to ensure greater coverage will require a price to be paid in additional funding for hospitals.

Medicaid and crowding out of private insurance: a re-examination using firm level data

Article Abstract:

An increase in Medicaid eligibility resulted in a decrease in private health coverage. Information provided by employers enabled researchers to find that employers made their private health plans less attractive so employees would select Medicaid. Some employers did not offer health care for the dependents of employees.

The effect of state children's health insurance program on health insurance coverage

Article Abstract:

The effect of state children health insurance program (SCHIP) eligibility on public and private insurance coverage of children is estimated. The results show that about 9% of children meeting income eligibility standards enrolled in public insurance. This program is considered favorable for low income families.
