Street-smart health care; Chicago hospital reaches out through partnerships that help turn around inner-city lives
Article Abstract:
Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL has partnered with nearby Lawson House YMCA to launch a community health program that serves inner-city residents. The program include a pregnancy prevention project, and a project under which teens are taught the value of self-esteem. It also offers onsite mental health services as well as a residential social service program.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations conducts triennial reviews that are expensive for the facilities that are evaluated. Defenders of the review system believe hospitals should streamline and computerize their information to keep costs down. Critics of the review system believe that the commission focuses on old issues that are irrelevant.
