Social support in critically ill adults: a replication

Article Abstract:

Ten critically ill adults were interviewed after discharge from a critical care unit to determine levels and importance of social support received. Six considered themselves highly supported; one rated himself as not at all supported, and one thought he was very highly supported. Attention and information are important components of support. Feeling supported leads to positive feelings; feeling unsupported leads to negative feelings. Either set of feelings has accompanying physiological and health consequences.

Transport considerations for the critically ill child

Article Abstract:

Adequate preparation may be the key ingredient of successful transport of the critically ill child. A critically ill child who needs to be transported to or between hospitals should receive a quick but thorough physical examination, paying special attention to the airway. Ground transport, helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft may be used. The transport crew should be experienced in transporting children. They should be familiar with using special transport equipment and therapeutic drugs.

Antibiotics: why they fail in patients who are critically ill

Article Abstract:

Several factors can affect the effectiveness of antibiotic therapy among patients with critical conditions. These include varying drug chemistry activity at different body locations and with different organisms, unidentified drug resistance, the presence of underlying conditions, and the need for supplemental interventions. Re-evaluation may be necessary for unresponsive infections.
