Surgical therapy for heart failure: care of the patient with partial left ventriculectomy
Article Abstract:
Partial left ventriculectomy (PLV) may improve cardiac function for some patients with late-stage heart failure, and may reduce the need for heart transplantation. Surgical resection of a portion of the left ventricle restores normal ventricular diameter to the dilated myocardium. At the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH, mitral valve repair is also performed on most PLV patients to prevent mitral regurgitation. Postoperative care emphasizes cardiac afterload reduction to reduce myocardial work, and the prevention of arrhythmias.

When to transplant: recipient selection for heart transplantation
Article Abstract:
Heart transplantation may be an effective way of extending the lives of selected patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). Most heart transplant recipients have diseased heart muscles (cardiomyopathy), either because of restricted blood flow to the muscle or other causes. Heart transplant teams must carefully evaluate potential heart recipients for physical and psychologic criteria and contraindications to make sure donor hearts are used wisely.
