The delirious cardiac surgical patient: theoretical aspects and principles of management
Article Abstract:
Nursing interventions may reduce the incidence of delirium in postoperative cardiac patients. Disordered attention, cognition or perception affects about 32% of patients following heart surgery. Delirium may reflect an acute change in brain metabolic processes, and alcohol withdrawal, adverse medication effects, and intraoperative embolization and hypotension may be important causes. Benzodiazepines or abrupt benzodiazepine withdrawal may cause 29% of cases in hospitalized patients. Improving postoperative environments may reduce patient stressors that contribute to delirium.

Cardiac Infections: Medical and Surgical Therapies
Article Abstract:
Cardiac infections have been linked with congenital vale disease, complications of cardiac surgery, immune-compromised patients, and intravenous catheter-related infections. Such infections can be bacterial, fungal, or viral and can affect the endocardium, myocardium, or pericardium. An understanding of the infectious cause is essential to treatment and the patient's recovery.
