The effects of regulation and competition in the NHS internal market: the case of general practice fundholder prices
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the effects of competition on the prices posted by medical service sellers. The competition in supply within a tightly regulated market was introduced by the UK National Health Service in its 1989 reforms. The hypothesis that despite regulation, market forces may have an effect on price was tested using the General Practice Fundholders. Results demonstrate the impact of market forces on price and the non-compliance on regulatory rules.

Price regulation in the pharmaceutical industry: prescription or placebo?
Article Abstract:
The potential benefits of pharmaceutical price regulation could be partially neutralized by high introductory price set by companies on newly developed drugs. Simulation models indicate that the optimal launching price of new drugs would be 50% higher than in unregulated market, resulting in consumer loss during the initial years and bringing benefits only after unregulated prices overtake the price ceiling set under the proposed regulation.
