Hospitals are beginning to manage their emergency room patient loads by making the arrangements on the world wide web. The internet technology is impressive due to the consensus between competing hospitals. For those emergency services that cannot rely on the phone lines carrying internet access, cellular and data communication systems are other options being pursued to speed up documentation and communication between area hospitals.

Four costliest outpatient procedures

Cataract extraction with lens insertion leads the list as the most expensive of 56 outpatient procedures, according to 'Outpatient Procedure Resource Book.' The next most expensive procedures are: left cardiac catheterization; upper GI endoscopy with biopsy; and diagnostic colonoscopy. Statistics are given for procedures performed in hospitals, in ambulatory surgical centers, and in doctors' offices.
