Broadmoor is first among equals

Article Abstract:

Broadmoor Hospital has opened a new two-ward unit at a cost of 1 million pounds sterling which has carpets, a garden, a gym, and an occupational therapy facility. Women with schizophrenia or other disruptive behaviours undergo care programmes lasting from 12 weeks to one year in an environment which is safer and more pleasant. A private report produced by the High Security Psychiatric Services Commissioning Board recommends that major reforms are needed in the care of female psychiatric patients. High security hospitals do not offer appropriate care to women.

Staff shortage threat to patient registers

Article Abstract:

Supervisions registers, which are designed to improve the monitoring of people who have been discharged from mental health units, may not operate effectively because many trusts do not have the necessary community mental health nurses to manage them. Only nurses in G-grade posts or higher are entitled to have their own caseloads, but many trusts have insufficient G-grade nurses. The Community Psychiatric Nurses' Association believes that its members do not have sufficient resources to cope with the new registers.

Widening the safety net

Article Abstract:

Implementation of the Reed report's recommendations on reform of the service to mentally-ill offenders has nursing implications. The report has recommended involvement of general psychiatry in care and treatment alongside special hospitals and secure units. The recommendation of more places in medium secure units will require extra nursing staff. The recommended extension of the care programme to prison leavers will also affect community psychiatric nurses. Training in forensic nursing will be necessary.
